Hochstein started practising taekwondo as a child but switched to figure skating when he was nine years old, inspired by the performances of Michelle Kwan at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games. His younger sister Veronica was a competitive skater as well. Hochstein is engaged to fellow team USA skater Caroline Zhang.
